Schlerotherapy

Spider veins, also known as telangiectasia or spider angiomas, are small, dilated blood vessels that appear close to the surface of the skin. They often resemble a web-like pattern or thin red, blue, or purple lines. Spider veins commonly occur on the legs, face, and other areas of the body.

The exact cause of spider veins is not fully understood, but they are believed to be caused by various factors, including genetics, hormonal changes, prolonged standing or sitting, obesity, and certain medical conditions. They are more prevalent in women and can develop with age.

Spider veins are usually a cosmetic concern and do not cause significant medical issues. However, some individuals may experience discomfort, such as itching or burning sensations, in the affected areas. In rare cases, spider veins may be associated with underlying venous insufficiency or other vascular conditions.

Treatment options for spider veins include sclerotherapy and laser therapy.. These treatments aim to improve the appearance of spider veins and reduce any associated symptoms.

Sclerotherapy is a minimally invasive medical procedure used to treat spider veins and varicose veins. It involves the injection of a specialized solution, called a sclerosant, directly into the affected veins. The solution causes irritation and inflammation in the vein walls, leading to their closure and eventual absorption by the body. During the procedure, a fine needle is used to inject the sclerosant solution into the targeted veins. The solution irritates the lining of the veins, causing them to collapse and stick together. Over time, the body naturally absorbs the sealed-off veins, and blood flow is rerouted to healthier veins.

Sclerotherapy is most commonly used to treat spider veins and smaller varicose veins that are close to the surface of the skin. It is performed without anesthesia directly in our office. After the treatment, you may be advised to wear compression stockings or bandages to promote healing and minimize swelling. Some mild discomfort, bruising, or discoloration may occur at the injection sites, but these usually subside within a few weeks.

Sclerotherapy is an effective treatment option for many individuals with spider veins or small varicose veins. However, it may not be suitable for everyone, especially those with certain medical conditions or extensive vein disease. During your consultation we will determine if sclerotherapy is the right choice and discuss potential risks and benefits based on your individual circumstances.
